| 13 Mary with the disciples at Pentecost
The Holy Spirit descends upon Mary and the disciples
|
O God make speed to save us, O Lord Make Haste to help us.
Glory to God, Source of all Being, Incarnate Word, and Holy Spirit, as it was in the beginning, is now and will be forever. Amen.
And it shall come to pass afterward, that I will pour out my spirit on all flesh; your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, your old men shall dream dreams, and your young men shall see visions. 29 Even upon the menservants and maidservants in those days, I will pour out my spirit. Joel 2:28-29
[ After Jesus ascended into heaven, the disciples]
returned to Jerusalem from the mount called Olivet, which is near Jerusalem, a sabbath day's journey away; and when they had entered, they went up to the upper room, where they were staying, Peter and John and James and Andrew, Philip and Thomas, Bartholomew and Matthew, James the son of Alphaeus and Simon the Zealot and Judas the son of James. All these with one accord devoted themselves to prayer, together with the women and Mary the mother of Jesus, and with his brothers.
When the day of Pentecost had come, they were all together in one place. And suddenly a sound came from heaven like the rush of a mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. And there appeared to them tongues as of fire, distributed and resting on each one of them. And they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and began to speak in other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance.
Acts 1:12-14, 2:1-4

Veni Creator Spiritus (opposite column)
Our father
Almighty God, whose Son our Savior Jesus Christ is the light of the world: Grant that your people, illumined by your Word and Sacraments, may shine with the radiance of Christs glory, that he may be known, worshiped, and obeyed to the ends of the earth; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who with you and the Holy Spirit lives and reigns, one God, now and for ever. Amen (collect for the Second Sunday after the Epiphany)

Veni Creator Spiritus Come, Holy Ghost, our souls inspire, And lighten with celestial fire. Thou the anointing Spirit art, Who dost thy sevenfold gifts impart. Thy blessed unction from above Is comfort, life, and fire of love. Enable with perpetual light The dullness of our blinded sight. Anoint and cheer our soiled face With the abundance of thy grace. Keep far our foes, give peace at home: Where thou art guide, no ill can come. Teach us to know the Father, Son, And thee, of both, to be but One. That through the ages all along, This may be our endless song: Praise to thy eternal merit, Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Latin, 9th century translation John Cosin (1594-1672)
O Mary, vehicle of fire, you bore the fire hidden and veiled beneath the ash of your humanity.
Catherine of Sienna d. 1380
